Ford is all set to introduce the all-electric Ford Explorer. Combining iconic looks with cutting-edge tech and rapid charging, it’s ready for any adventure. Showcasing a crossover style, this all-electric Explorer is an important step on the path to electrification from Ford and a new dimension of compact yet practical motoring.
The new Ford Explorer is a product of the electric vehicle (EV) partnership between Ford and Volkswagen. It takes advantage of feedback from customers on VW’s EVs as it has been built on the same MEB platform as the ID.4. What’s more, the same batteries are included in the Explorer which can also be found in the ID.4.
The Ford Explorer takes a step away from the Volkswagen ID4 upon first glance, opting for a more robust silhouette. This SUV encapsulates Ford’s American heritage, with a tall grille featuring an oversized Blue Oval emblem, along with silver skid plates and air curtains to improve aerodynamics. Its vertical tail lamps and light blade feature mimic the front, while the rear pillars are detailed with a unique graphic. The 19-, 20-, and 21-inch wheels truly make it stand out among the competition.
The Ford’s interior is markedly different from its exterior, featuring some control elements borrowed from the Volkswagen ID4. A compact 5.0-inch digital instrument panel delivers essential information to the driver, while the dashboard is accentuated by its centrepiece – a reconfigurable 15.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, adjustable to accommodate drivers of various heights. Both front and rear seats of the car provide ample legroom; however, due to the underfloor battery pack, rear seat passengers might find their feet elevated uncomfortably. Additionally, if three individuals are seated across the back row, those at the sides might find their heads brushing against the ceiling liner. Additionally the SUV body style and the shared platform with the ID 4 ensures that you will have sufficient boot space for all your needs.
The Explorer series will initially introduce the rear-wheel-drive model, equipped with 168 horsepower and a 52kWh (usable 55kWh) battery pack. This configuration allows for an estimated range of up to 218 miles on a single charge. For those seeking additional power, Ford is also offering a more potent, 282 horsepower, single-motor variant featuring an 82kWh (usable 77kWh) battery. This more robust version offers a travel distance of up to 335 miles. The top-tier model further enhances the peak charging speeds from 130kW to 170kW, putting it on par with Volkswagen’s fastest technology. As such, it competes directly with the top-of-the-line ID.4 GTX SUV, offering an impressive output of 335 horsepower. The Ford Explorer will provide an array of driver support technology, including its lane change assist feature that can effect a shift in lane with the simple press of your indicator button.
If the aesthetic of the Ford Explorer captivates you and you envision one in your driveway, you’ll need to exercise patience until 2024. While Ford has yet to release specific details, the Explorer’s price is anticipated to start between ÂŁ35,000 to ÂŁ40,000. The purchase process could potentially be fully digital, with the option to pick up your new car from your local dealership.
